Samsung Omnia HD Comes to India

Features a huge 3.7 inch AMOLED screen sporting a 360 x 640 pixel resolution

Samsung has announced the launch of its first Series 60 Fifth Edition handset, the Omnia i8910 HD in India. The power packed cellphone boasts of a host of new features, most notably, its 8 megapixel camera and HD video recording (720p @ 30fps) ability.
The Omnia HD features a huge 3.7 inch AMOLED screen sporting a 360 x 640 pixel resolution. This should make your Video and image watching experience simply amazing. The Omnia HD also features an ARM Cortex A8 processor running at 600 MHz. There seems to be conflicting reports regarding the processor with some reports talking about the processor being a 1Ghz one! If that was not all there's a s separate 3D Graphics HW Accelerator thrown in as well. The Omnia HD also features a 3.5 mm audio jack, DNSe 2.0 (Digital Natural Sound Engine) and Virtual 5.1 channel Dolby surround sound.

The phone runs Samsungs proprietary Touchwiz UI over the S60 Fifth Edition interface. Overall, the look and feel of the device is classier than that of the N97. The only advantage Nokia has over the Samsung now seems to be the physical QWERTY keyboard.
The Omnia HD has been priced at Rs 33,990 which pits it directly against the N97 and it looks like N97 no longer looks THAT appealing anymore!

Next-Gen Walkman S-Series Details Leaked

Alleged details about Sony's next-gen Walkman, S-Series, have been leaked by a French gadget Website that reports the upcoming model will support 42 hours of music play, FM tuner, video capability, drag-and-drop file transfer and a built-in speaker. The site, Materiel.net, says the new Walkman will be available in 8GB (NWZ-S544) and 16GB (NWZ-S545) capacity with both having a 2.4-inch LCD screen with QVGA display.

Image is from Materiel.net

The French site lists the S-Series pricing as 129 ($183) for the 8GB and 149 ($211) for the 16GB. There's no word on U.S. pricing, but Sony's current 16 GB S-Series Walkman sells for about $160. It's likely the newer models will stay around the same price point as current S-Series devices. On the down side, it doesn't look like the refreshed Walkman will come with Wi-Fi capability like the new X-Series does, and Materiel lists black as the only available color for the new models.

If Materiel's specs are correct then the new devices are just a minor tweak from the current S-series. Compared to the 16GB S-Series on store shelves today, the new device gets a playing time boost of two hours from 40 hours to 42 hours, the screen goes from 1.75-inches to 2.4-inches, and the built-in speaker is new. The new S-Series also gets a more compact, Mickey Mouse-style button layout than its predecessors. There's no word on a release date yet, but we'll keep you posted once we hear something.

Flickr Improves Photo Search

Better search, more info
The colossal task of browsing through billions of photos pooled in the photo-sharing site Flickr will now be easier, courtesy the website's revamped search results page.
According to Flick's blog, now when you search for something, the results page will have the new "View" controls at the top of the page. These controls allow the results to display in different sizes and formats. Both small and medium views will have an 'i' icon on every thumbnail - clicking this will show detailed information about a particular photo.
On the right side of the page - based upon how members are tagging their photos and participating on Flickr, users will see links to the groups, photographers, tag clusters and places that are most closely related what they're looking for.

There's also simple summary information on the page when a user refines their search.

LG W2243T:21.5-inch LCD monitor

The novelty of 22-inch full HD monitors is passe, and manufactures now need to offer more than just a sticker proclaiming the 1080p-ness of the panel. So far, the Samsung 2233sw has been the only convert to impress me with its combination of design, clean cut lines and picture quality. Let's see if the LG can manage to leave a mark as well.

Design

LG's W2243T features a 21.5-inch liquid crystal display and great looking slim design. Its smooth glossy surface resembles the Samsung T220 but there are differences in design. Like the flowing OSD button layout at the bottom right of the bezel, which also includes a wavy power button that glows red when turned on. As compared to the touch sensitive buttons of the T220, these are mechanical and have easy-to-read labels printed on the bezel.

The panel stands on a sturdy piano finish stand, which isn't as difficult to connect as the Samsung T220, but doesn't allow the monitor to swivel, giving it only a small amount of tilt instead. The stand is sturdy and holds the panel well in place. The back of the monitor has a DVI-D and a D-Sub (VGA) port for connectivity.

Features

The LG W2243T comes with a 21.5-inch panel that has a maximum resolution of 1920x1080. It has a response time of 5 ms, contrast ratio of 30000:1 (dynamic) and has a maximum brightness of 300 cd/m2. Viewing angles are 170 degree (horizontal) and 160 degree (vertical).

It also features the LG f-Engine that gives the user a choice of viewing presets for different scenarios like Cinema or Movie mode, Internet mode, Text mode, etc. As with almost every other monitor, the experience with these presets is not that great. I'd rather tune it myself.

The good part is the W2243T comes with a bundled DVI-D cable that connects the computer to the monitor. The DVI port automatically selects the best resolution and brightness/contrast values; something like an Auto Adjust mode, so no need for the presets.
Performance

The LG W2243T was subject to an exhaustive list of tests ranging from the objective DisplayMate to the subjective gameplay, internet, text and movie viewing experience.

The LG W2243T cleared almost all the tests with remarkable ease. It performed particularly well in the brightness and color reproduction tests. However, it did manage to throw up a mismatch in the Horizontal Color Registration test, just like every other monitor we have tested here.

Surfing the Internet or using it for day-to-day tasks is a joy. It has ample space on the screen for more than a few windows and displays text without any jagged edges or fringing of any kind.

Movie experience was good but it is evident that the LG W2243T cannot match up to the Samsung 2233sw. It lacks the finesse of the Samsung monitors and pictures. Though good, it appears to be a little flat and less lively.
Overall, the LG W2243T turned out to be a decent competitor for the Samsung 2233sw, and is good enough for everyday usage at home or office. The only thing that might go against the LG is its price.

Verdict

The LG W2243T is available in the market for about Rs. 9,150 with a 3-year warranty. For that price, you could also get yourself the Samsung 2233sw, which is an even better deal. I'd say, skip the LG go for the Samsung.

Ashes Cricket 2009

Visuals and presentation need improvement

As a kid I was hooked onto Brian Lara's Cricket and it still remains my favorite cricket game on any platform. Codemasters did what EA couldn't; it captured the fun and excitement of cricket, even though the game was riddled with bugs. Codemasters next release in 2007 was also fairly successful. Fast-forward to 2009 and we have the latest cricket iteration called Ashes 2009.

I got some time with the game recently and to be honest, I was rather disappointed. The game was playable on the Xbox 360 and featured a completely new control scheme. This is the Ashes edition, which features all modes found in the previous game plus the Ashes Tour, which is clearly targeted at the European market. In case you are a 20-20 fanatic, the game also features a 20-20 mode, for some quick cricketing action.

The first thing I noticed was that the game's visuals are not up to the mark; they lack detail and are not on par with today's high standards. I was ready to ignore the visuals as it's the gameplay that I am interested in and I don't care if Irfan Pathan looks like Ajit Agarkar or if they call him Irkan (copyright issues). Unfortunately, the gameplay doesn't garner much praise either. The new control scheme breaks up shots into a very easy attack, defend and lob. Its common sense that you choose your shot depending on the line and length of the delivery, it is also very important to time your shot perfectly.

The HUD displays your current posture while batting. You can choose to go on your front foot or back foot or let the game decide on auto. The batting posture is very critical; it can make or break a shot. I noticed that leaving the batting posture on auto does work well, but it also makes batting a little easy. A player's performance while batting/bowling depends on the confidence bar, which is displayed right below every player's name. If as a batsman you strike the ball cleanly, get a few boundaries you will become more confident and reach the fearless stage.

As the name suggests, when you are fearless, even complicated shots will not be that difficult to connect. On the other hand if you miss a few shots and are low on confidence, it will become increasingly hard to get back your rhythm. This particular aspect makes every ball important, so you can't play unorthodox shots early on. Bowling is fairly simple, with every delivery broken into (for fast bowlers) in-swinger, out-swinger, slower-one and so on. You need to make the batsman work, make him think, and keep changing the line and length.

I played a few matches and was able to master (read survive) the harder difficulty in a very brief period. It was a fun experience but as with all cricket games, it's still a little buggy. I have high hopes from the game if the developers can work on the visuals and presentation. The game that I played was a preview copy, so I am hoping they make some major changes before the game is out this month. Keep watching this space for a review very soon

Chinese Mobiles: The Flip-flop Continues

Mobile operators on a mission to 'legalize' unbranded Chinese handsets.
By now, we have seen numerous flip-flops regarding Chinese phones, sometimes from the government, the other times from the operators. It was only in June that the Directorate-General of Foreign Trade ordered that mobile handsets without an IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number cannot be imported anymore. Looks like its time for (yet another) operator flip-flop.
So, after a status quo, Chinese handsets are set to make a comeback (not really a comeback, because sales of such handsets apparently had not been affected even after the so called ban on them). So, while we might have had seen many changes in the government and the mobile operators' stance, one thing that has not changed is the sale of such handsets, which continues till date. Unabated.

In the latest move, mobile operators seem to be the ones who are on a mission to "legalize" unbranded Chinese handsets by assigning them new IMEI numbers. This move is similar to the one that was "directed" by the government a few months ago. The cellcos will assign extra, six digit suffixes to existing handsets that share the same IMEI number. Technically (and legally), no two handsets should share an IMEI number. That, however, is not true in case of unbranded Chinese handsets. While some do not come with an IMEI number at all, others have spoofed IMEIs with thousands of handsets sharing the same IMEI number. Now, this causes huge issues for the cellcos because they are the ones that are obliged to keep a watch on who uses their networks. In the past, with legal handsets, it was not a difficult task to track down the mobile phone using which a certain call was made. With spoofed IMEIs, thousands of phones share the same IMEI resulting a loophole for criminals and other such entities to escape from the police. It is this loophole that the cellcos want to block by assigning modified IMEIs.

Nice. It looks quite rosy on paper. However, what has been lacking is the implementation part of this. Chinese handsets have proliferated so deeply into the market that it is virtually impossible to quarantine each and every handset out there. The operators also seem reluctant to "cut off" access to such handsets as that would affect revenues. If that was not all, people who had purchased such handsets would find their handsets unusable one fine day. That's unfair for them because they have paid money to purchase these handsets. Now, what the operators are doing here is "walking the tight rope" and toeing a middle line. Its success, however, will only be seen if the implementation part of it goes well. This, sadly, has not been the case, at least from the experience we had in the past few months.

Nokia's New 5800i XpressMusic Soon

This might actually skip Wi-Fi!

The U.S. FCC website seems to be the best place to look for future product launches and scourge for "leaks". In yet another example of such a leak, sharp-eyed folks have found out that a cousin to the 5800 XpressMusic is awaiting approval from the FCC. The new product goes by the name 5800i. Now, contrary to your assumption, the 5800i will not be an upgrade over the original 5800 Xpressmusic. In fact, from what we know, this one would actually skip Wi-Fi!

To make things more confusing, the camera on this one seems to be marginally better than the one on the 5800. The 3 megapixel camera boasts of a longer focus distance - 4.6mm as opposed to 3.7mm. Nokia seems to think that users would prefer a better camera than Wi-Fi. We cannot think of any other reason why Wi-Fi was dropped from the features list. It would only make sense if this one was priced well below where the 5800 now retails.

In any case, there seems to be quite some time before this one sees its launch. In the meantime, Nokia might just clear up the rough edges and this one should actually make a good 5800 successor/replacement.

Apple quietly adds 2TB Time Capsule

New 2TB Time Capsule replaces the 500GB model

Apple has quietly added 2TB Time Capsule for additional storage. Back in March, Apple had refreshed its Time Capsule bringing dual-channel network connectivity option. Time Capsule, automatic backup for Mac-PC and 802.11n WiFi Base station, could connect devices in 802.11g and 802.11n channel modes simultaneously. Apparently, Apple's Time Capsule is different from Yahoo's Time Capsule, in case you're confused.

The new Time Capsule model with 2TB storage capacity is available at the price of $499 (Rs. 24,000 approx.) and the 500GB capacity bearing Time Capsule has been dropped from the Apple Store. Apple has quietly dropped 500GB Time Capsule for $299 (Rs. 14,400 approx.) from its lineup and slashed price of 1TB Time Capsule from $499 (Rs. 24,000 approx.) to $299 (Rs. 14,400 approx.).
The new models have dual-channel networking feature that allows broadcasting WiFi at 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz frequencies. Also, the Guest Networking features allows setting up second network for guest users 'without' giving away the WiFi password. Of course, the 2TB Time Capsule can be used as external storage and also to upload/download files from a MobileMe account.

Sony Ericsson Logo to get a Makeover?

More versions of its original green and white logo - in multiple colors might be seen

Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson has been in trouble for quite some time now. The company, which has been on a steady loss-making spree over the past year or so, is trying new ways to claw back to a decent position in the global phone market.
As a part of its "getting back on track" regime, the past few months have seen a number of product launches from the company. In the future, we will be seeing impressive Sony Ericsson handsets like the Rachael, also known as the Xperia X3, and the even higher end X5, of which we do not have any details as of now. Also in the pipeline is the X2, which should see the light of the day soon. If these handsets turn out to be good, it will no doubt bolster the company's chances of a speedy recovery.
Apart from all these, Sony Ericsson is likely to announce a revamped logo. Eldar Murtazin of Mobile Review has, in a blog post, revealed that Sony Ericsson will get more versions of its original green and white logo - in multiple colors. He has also posted a sample picture of how the revamped logo might look. The other colored logos are not likely to make it to the hardware, and are expected to be used extensively for marketing campaigns. We guess these do look good.
